Here I choose one of my favourite websites—efl537.com as my reflection target. Why I like it is that it is practical and useful for the ESL/EFL students, as well as for the teachers, although it doesn’t have so much resources or content as other websites, and it is not colorful, either. Its webpage is designed well and clearly so that the readers can be guided easily to what they need.

There is another reason that I choose this website as the research target. After taking this course, I become interested in CALL, so I’d like to teach my future students more about how to use computer or online resources to learn English. And the efl537.com is really a good website, it contains online learning resources, softwares which can be used as language learning tools.

The third reason that I like it is that the way efl537.com website design is flexible so that the readers could fine the same item in different categories or different approaches. Thus, we can not only use this kind of website as a resource, but also can learn the design method to create more teaching and learning resources. I think this is the real purpose of this course that not only to learn how to use computer resources, but also create our own teaching resources.

This kind of website could be a general learning log for both the students and teachers. For example, it is created weekly, so the students learn things step by step, and when they forget something they learned in previous weeks, it is easy for them to find it in specific journal; in the students pages, all of the students and teacher could see how the students works done and when they were done, so that all the works could be shared by everyone. However, I have an advice about this students pages item. The works are done by the students, so we should pay attention to the privacy of those, although the students blogs could be not published, most of them are pubished automatically after posted.

In my future teaching, I’m sure I will use a similar website to help my teaching and my students’ learning, and I’m going some ideas from the efl537.com website, such as, the research and link design. I mean that when I design the website, I will try to have the same link in different but related places or items so that the search could be convenient for the students. Absolutely I am going to introduce most of the online learning resources and softwares to my future students in the website, such as, Chinswing, EVO, Edtechtalk discussion websites; Daily Grammar, Free Listening online learning websites; and Audacity, 7 zip softwares which are not only for learning usage, but also for common use of computers.

About the CALL, I like its advantages because it is electronic or on the Internet, we don’t worry anything would be lost. New Media is a good way to implement these.

I have been feeling comfortable here using computer and New Media to learn, but I’m worried about that if I were in China where I couldn’t have these convinient device, or if I were a little child who didn’t have the knowledge how to use the computer or New Media.

Thus, I think the use of CALL, especially the New Media is more important and necessary for the teachers rather than the little language learners.  The teachers could utilize New Media to create the teaching materials, and easy learning materials for the students, such as, using podcast for speaking and listening classes. It’s really a good way to creat the listening materials by the theachers themsevles, and to record the students speech and to have them to campare to the original speech in order to improve bot their speaking and listening at the same time. If we could have each class own one computer, the teachers also can make the reading materials electronic so that less papers will be wasted. In addition, when we are reading, all the students should look up to the front so that the teachers could draw the students’ attention better and more easily.  It will be better if the students have PC at home. They could save and review all the materials whenever they want.

For advanced or older learners who could master certain knowledge of computer and Internet, New Media will be an excellent assistant for their learning. For example, 7 Zip could help them save the space of their hard drive; they could download the resources which they think useful by themselves; they also could use Del.icio.us to mark useful websites, Edtechtalk, EVO, or Chinswing to contact the people all over the world to get more related learning information and discuss with their fellows.

I’m struggling with the use of New Media as well, and looking forward to more and more usages. I also really want to implement in my own and my future students learning and teaching.

First I should apologize that I didn’t write this reflection on time. However, I’m also lucky that I write now, because I really have more thoughts and feelings about EFL537–CALL now than I did at that time.

Untial week 5, I was a little bit confused about the CALL course. I didn’t know what I should have done for this course, and I didn’t realize how useful it was, either. While after four more weeks and more working on it, I really appreciate those I’ve learned form this course and the professor, such as, how to make personal website, the use of computer and Internet tools to  make our learning & teaching, and memorizing much easier and more comfortable.

The Hot Potato software has me feel the enjoyment of making my own quiz or test; Del.icio.us website which is like a bookmarker solve the problem that I cannot remember every useful website; Podcast which I had no idea about now is a good assistant for my learning and teaching speaking and listening; Chinswing is such a good assistant as well, in addition, it also helps me to work with and get help from people all around the world.

Presently, I was struggling on how to use CALL in China where we don’t have so much high-tech device or equipment as we have here in USA; however, I really appreciate the advantages the high-tech brings to us, so it is more importan to develop Chinese technology rather than working with limited technology device.
